Our many thanks go to the almost 400 people who attended the 19th Annual Home Sweet Home on Thursday, October 4, 2018.

The event raised $135,000 (gross) and approximately $110,000 (net) to help the families in crisis that Family Promise serves through its Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) shelter program.

Emceed by Scott Swan from WTHR (Channel 13), the event had a string quartet (made possible by Davis Wholesale Supply, Home Sweet Home's longest running corporate sponsor), a silent auction, wine pull, plated dinner, with an open bar provided by Sun King Brewing and Big Red Liquors.

After an invocation by the Reverend Jack Reed from New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, chair of the event Kenda Resler Friend kicked off bidding for the gourmet dessert auction, presented by Major Tool & Machine.HSH cake 10 4 18

The three highlights of the program started when Marcia Angstadt of Family Promise's Advisory Council presented the G. Dean Lindsey Leadership Award to Nancy Hardin (left in photo).  For twenty years, Nancy has furtherered Family Promise's mission through volunteering at Meridian Street United Methodist, coordinating volunteers, serving on the Board of Directors and Advisory Council, and raising more than $100,000 in the last two years alone for the mission.  Read a transcript of Marcia's remarks and Nancy's story here.

Following the presentation, Yolanda Brewster (right in photo) shared her story of her stay in the Family Promise IHN program.  Despite the struggles before her stay, she now has been in her new home for a year, and her two kids are enrolled in preschool and one of Indianapolis' best kindergartens.  She has received two promotions at her job already, and has more great years ahead saving for a house.  Read a transcript of Yolanda's remarks here.

When Kenda returned to the podium for the final part of the dessert auction, she announced the offer of a $25,000 matching gift from the David P. Sheetz Foundation if the auction raised its goal of $45,000.  It had raised $39,000 so far at that point.  Within three minutes, the crowd responded generously and raised more than $48,000 on dessert alone, achieving the matching gift!

On the way out, a suprise winner at each table took the centerpiece (made possible by Terry Lee Hyundai) and all enjoyed Edible Arrangements favors at the door (with special thanks to Strada Education Network).

This fun and inspiring night would not have been possible without the unsung heroes--the volunteer Home Sweet Home Committee.  Thank you Kenda Resler Friend for chairing the event with leadership that saw it be the most successful to date.  Thank you Jo Flinn for a record-breaking silent auction, Judy Joutras for the most delicious dessert auction, and Nancy Hardin for sponsorships gallore.  Thank you Marcella Slabosky for organizing tickets and registration for months, Laura Westerfield for the graphic design for every single event material, Pat Eckert for strong IT support with the auctions, and John Chambers for stage management and filling in with every single area of the event in different capacities.  Emilie Walson shopped at Goodwill for weeks and weeks to get event decor, Claire Mauschbaugh led the social media effort to an event sellout, and Lacey Echols not only pitched in 50 different ways, but provided key advice from a former chair to make sure old mistakes were left in the past.  Many of these individuals gave more than 100 hours to this cause (and then some), and many for numerous years in a row, and Family Promise thanks them with all our heart.

Next year's Home Sweet Home celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Interfaith Hospitality Network starting in Greater Indianapolis in October of 1994.  Save the date: October 3, 2019.
